Independent perspectives / Issue 09
Places that stay with you.
Objects with a point of view.
People making the everyday more interesting.
Every story belongs to one of seven topics. Each opens into its stories online and an index of everything we have printed on it.
All topicsPlaces · From Issue 07
A day on foot along the limestone coast south of Marseille, from the first inlet at dawn to a cove you can only reach by a flight of old steps.

Eight long reads on rooms, bowls, linen, balconies and Sunday lunch. 160 pages, sewn, on uncoated paper.
Long-form on purpose. A story runs as long as it needs to, usually four to six thousand words.
Writers and photographers travel together. Nothing is shot in a studio or borrowed from a press kit.
March, June, September and December. We would rather be late than thin.
The cover price and subscriptions pay for the magazine. Nothing in it is sponsored or paid for.
The threshold piece in Issue 08 had me walking around my own flat with a notebook. I moved the reading chair the same afternoon.
I teach landscape design and I hand the coast story to every first-year student. It explains a place better than our lecture does.
The only magazine I keep. No adverts, no noise, and photographs that make me want to go and look at things properly.
One email on the first Sunday of the month: a story from the archive, three things worth seeing and what we are working on next.
Monthly, never more. Unsubscribe with one click. How we use your email.
Long reads from the magazine, published online one week at a time. Everything else lives in print and in the topic archive.
Seven subjects we return to in every issue. Open one to read its stories online and browse an index of everything we have printed on it.
Printed, bound and framed in small runs. Back issues stay on sale until the last copy goes; prints are signed editions of fifty.
Your bag is empty. Add an issue, a print or a subscription and come back here.
Go to the shopThis site is a template: the payment step is not connected yet, so nothing has been charged and no email has been sent.
A subscription is one payment for a year of Ferrow. It never renews on its own: we write a month before it ends and you decide.
More answers on the questions page.
If you subscribe before the 20th of a print month (March, June, September, December) your subscription starts with that issue. Otherwise it starts with the current issue, posted within three working days.
Nothing, unless you ask. We email a month before your last issue with a link to renew. If you do nothing, the subscription simply stops.
Yes. Write to us and we refund every issue you have not yet received. Gift subscriptions are refunded to the person who paid.
About Ferrow
Ferrow started in 2024 at a kitchen table in Marseille, with a simple brief: find people who make the everyday more interesting, and give them the room and the photographs they deserve.
Nine issues later we are a team of three editors and a few dozen contributors. We still travel to every story, still print on uncoated paper and still carry no advertising.
Editor in chief
Twenty years on newspaper features desks before starting Ferrow. Edits every story twice and writes the letter.
Director of photography
Shoots on medium format and commissions every photographer we publish. Has walked the coast path eleven times.
Art director
Designs the magazine, the type and the scattered covers. Previously at a photobook studio in Lyon.
Every story is reported in person, by a writer and a photographer travelling together. Nothing comes from a press release.
No styling teams and no props brought in. If a room is untidy, it is untidy in the magazine too.
Sewn binding, uncoated FSC paper and a printer in Verona we visit for every issue. Made to be read more than once.
Writers and photographers are paid on acceptance, at published rates, and keep the rights to their work.
We commission around a third of each issue from pitches. Tell us about a person, a place or an object you cannot stop thinking about.
Pitch a story, ask about stocking the magazine or just say hello. A person reads every message.
We supply bookshops, galleries and cafés in packs of five or more, at 40 percent off the cover price, sale or return for the first two issues.
Subscriptions, orders and contributing. If your question is not here, write to us.
Four times a year, in March, June, September and December. Subscribers receive each issue about a week before it reaches shops.
No. You pay once for four or eight issues. A month before the last one we email you a renewal link; if you ignore it, nothing happens.
Yes, any time before the 20th of a print month. Use the link in your confirmation email or write to help@ferrowquarterly.com.
Choose "As a gift" on the subscribe page. We post the first issue with a printed card and your message, and never charge the recipient.
Everywhere. Orders leave Marseille within three working days. Delivery is free in the EU on orders over €60; full rates are on the delivery page.
Unopened issues and unframed prints can be returned within 30 days for a full refund. Framed prints are made to order and can be returned only if they arrive damaged.
Every print is an edition of fifty, numbered and signed by the photographer. When an edition sells out it is not reprinted in any size.
Send a photo to help@ferrowquarterly.com within 14 days and we will post a replacement. There is no need to return the damaged copy.
Use the pitch form. Tell us who or what the story is about, why now, and how you would report it. Three or four sentences is enough.
Always. Writers and photographers are paid on acceptance at the rates in our contributor guide, and travel costs are covered for commissioned stories.
Yes, if the work was made recently and has not been published elsewhere. Send a link to a selection of twenty images at most.
Try a shorter word such as "gift", "returns" or "pitch", or write to us and a person will answer.
A short email from the editors on the first Sunday of each month. One story from the archive, three things worth seeing and a note on what we are working on.
Dear reader, Issue 09 went to the printer in Verona on Thursday. Kenji spent the afternoon at the press checking the colour of a single tomato.
Read slowly. Maren

Cotton rag paper moves with humidity. Leave a finger's width behind the frame and avoid bathrooms and kitchens.
Unframed prints ship between boards. Lift them by the white border with clean, dry hands and frame behind glass.
